ISTE's NETS for Students (NETS•S) are the standards for evaluating the skills and knowledge students need to learn effectively and live productively in an increasingly global and digital world. Below you will find one of the ISTE NETS student standards (Research and Information Fluency). Below that information we also have provided specific examples of how these objectives might be addressed in a classroom, by grade levels. After reading this information please brainstorm and collaborate as a group to complete the the table on the bottom of the page.
Research and Information Fluency
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry. b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. d. Process data and report results.
Examples of classroom learning activities students might engage in to address the above NETS standards/objectives (ISTE). 1. Identify, research, and collect data on an environmental issue using digital resources and propose a developmentally appropriate solution. Grades PreK-2 2.Select and apply digital tools to collect, organize, and analyze data to evaluate theories or test hypotheses. Grades 3-5 3.Select and use the appropriate tools and digital resources to accomplish a variety of tasks and to solve problems. Grades 6-8 4.Model legal and ethical behaviors when using information and technology by properly selecting, acquiring, and citing resources. Grades 9-12
Please take some time to review and discuss this standard and then return as a group to complete the chart. You group facilitator will be the time keeper!
An essential question to consider when beginning this process would be:
Will Ludlow Public School students be prepared with the necessary 21st Century skills to compete and acquire jobs in this ever changing global economy?
If not, what steps must the district take to make this come to fruition? If we are, what (if anything) can the district do to better assist our students?

Plan strategies to guide inquiry:
-Teach students to evaluate appropriate web sources for the task.
Access to Internet-enabled devices, in students hands, so that it is available to be integrated in a classroom learning environment.
Familiarity with Web 2.0 tools.
-Utilize technology to investigate alternative perspectives from typical teaching (Revolutionary War from the eyes of UK student)
Access to the necessary licenses/accounts for web tools.
-Decide which Web 2.0 tools to use for given lesson plans.
Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.
Experience with the tools themselves, and the technology that provides access (netbooks, tablets, phones)
-Teach students about copyright law, fair use; how it applies to using, collecting and modifying data for use in their projects and presentations.
Fair use/copyright/evaluation of Web resources.
Creative Commons.
-Teach students to recognize bias in information collected online and to evaluate the "quality"/authenticity of sources.
Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.
-Decide which Web 2.0 tools to use for given lesson plans; decide which tools provide valuable/authentic information online, in the same manner we already evaluate offline/traditional sources.
Familiarity with Web 2.0 tools.
-Understand which tools (animoto, storybird, etc.) are best suited to different courses (science, creative writing, etc.) Which tool best presents/accommodates the information that is being presented.
-Provide some flexibility for students to choose the tools that best suits their experience/style and content, thereby providing space for creativity and expression in their work.
